Vegan, vegetable or cactus silk, are all terms used to describe Moroccon Sabra silk. The fabric is produced from the long fibres of the aloe succulent.
The long spiky leaves are collected and hammered to a pulp before being left to soak in water. The fibres are then separated and dyed with vegetable dye before being spun to make the thread. This technique has been passed down from father to son through the generations.
The rhythmic clack of the loom is a constant background noise in the textile souks of Marrakech and Fez & and spools of brightly coloured yarns and multicoloured fabrics can be seen hanging from the walls. The vibrant, almost metallic shine of the sabra silk is woven with strips of chenille, camel wool or weft cotton creating contrasting colours and textures. Each is a unique handmade piece. It is these fabrics that Moroccan has become famous for and each one is as vibrant as the country itself.
– Available as cushions, poufs and throws, in a huge range of colours, sabra silks will brighten up any room.
Approximate sizes are as follows
Cushions 45 x 45cm

We are Debbie and Andy Wilkes, we both love to travel. I’m passionate about colours and fabrics, particularly saris. I love to wander round the souks of Morocco although I'm also very happy in the John Lewis cushion department. Andy is a foodie and is in charge of the food buying for the shop, and usually making dinner too. We’ve added 3 cats to the family since moving here, one that adopted us and one came out of a bin at a few hours old and had to be bottle fed every 2 hours. If you have any queries or you’d just like to contact someone real please do send us a mail, dropl in, or give us a call.
